Is it for the Love of Food, The Super Bowl’s Reason for Exciting?

As we talk with our friends, coworkers, and customers who are gearing up for game day on Sunday, a running tally forms. The question is: what part of the Super Bowl are most people excited about? Is it the actual game, the award winning spectacular commercials, to see Madonna’s Half Time show? Or is it the festivities, the social aspect of gathering and eating delicious but unhealthy food?

According to a study by Hannon McKendry Integrated, 54% of viewers last year watched the Super Bowl for the commercials versus the actual game. Well, the truth is that no matter who wins, what the commercials are, and who performs at Half Time you need good food! Who says you need to have fried chicken, cheesy nachos, and greasy pizza in order to enjoy the game? Not to worry, Tasty Bite has some simple recipes that will please any crowd whether they are vegetarian, vegan, or carnivores.

These recipes can be found in our Tasty Bite recipe section. When looking to create some easy appetizers, try one of our creations: Spicy Vegan Spinach Artichoke Dip, Lentil Magic Nacho Scoops, Snappy Soya Nachos, Madras Lentils Wraps or Dip, Spicy Pad Thai Wings, Thai Chicken Pizza or Spinach, Artichoke and Tomato Pizza. All served with a side of this delicious Guacamole, which can be found on the Food Network, and a nice cold beverage.

We hope you have a relaxing and delicious Super Bowl, enjoy!

Being Vegetarian in the Midwest

Is it true that some parts of the Midwest leave much to be desired for a vegetarian? As a recent addition to the meat-loving city of Chicago after living in Massachusetts, I must admit that it is hard to find decent vegetarian options at restaurants in and around the city. Most streets in Boston offer some vegetarian options- be it a healthy café or a full on vegetarian restaurant. After a few lonely months in Chicago, the pickings are certainly slim.

My suspicions were confirmed today after reading New York Times columnist A. G. Sulzberger’s article, “Meatless in the Midwest: A Tale of Survival.”  Humorously stating: “So yes, I’ve eaten at some of these famous restaurants. There was the meal at the Golden Ox steakhouse (baked potato), Stroud’s fried chicken (rolls) and Arthur Bryant’s barbeque…(a mug of Budweiser),” Sulzberger depicts how vegetarians are forced to piece together sides, appetizers and beer in order to make a meal. This truly resonated with me as I have often found myself ordering off the menu just so I can have something decent to eat. When Sulzberger says, “Even though the region boasts some of the finest farmland in the world, there is a startling lack of fresh produce here,” I found myself wondering why the locals don’t take advantage of what the land has to offer. With a population that’s rich in culture, one would think that the restaurants would capitalize on the rich local produce and support the various lifestyles in the area.

Although I find these struggles on the street on a daily basis, I am always stocked at home with fresh produce and my favorite vegetarian products. One of the more popular items in my pantry is the 100% vegetarian, ready to eat, all-natural brand Tasty Bite. The products are incredibly delicious and are there for me when I need something nutritious and simple. There have even been times that I have left a restaurant in Chicago and eaten the Tasty Bite I keep in my car! It might be tough for my family and I to eat out in Chicago, but I know we will never go hungry as long as Tasty Bite is in the house.

Let us know, what extremes have you gone to, being a vegetarian, either in the Midwest, or wherever you may live? Email your stories to: Comments@tastybite.com.

Happy Diwali, Hindu Festival of Lights

Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights will be celebrated by Indians all over the world on the 26th of October, this year. The date changes every year as it is based on the lunar calendar. The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the lifting of spiritual darkness. Houses are cleaned and decorated, traditional oil lamps called Diyas are lit and intricate colorful patterns are made at the entrance of the house, to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. Traditions vary, but mostly the day starts with a cleansing oil bath before sunrise, new clothes, prayer, bursting of firecrackers and the distribution of gifts to family and friends.

Mouth-watering Indian sweets are an important part of Diwali. Every region in the country has its own traditional special sweets and serving them to guests is a way of spreading joy and goodwill. Though sweets are the main feature, a wide variety of deep fried snacks and savory mixes are also available during this festival....they taste great and are quite addictive!

Try a few of our recipes to help celebrate Diwali: Tasty Bite Savory Mix, Festive Biriyani, or our Saffron Rice Pudding. Please submit your Diwali recipes using Tasty Bite products. As a thank you we will send you a free product of your choice.

All 39 of our products are 100% vegetarian. We have 20 delicious entrées that will fulfill your needs for lunch and dinner. In fact, all 6 of our Meal Inspirations were designed to be rich in protein and fiber. Check our blog on vegetarian protein called “Vegetarian Protein, Yes You Can” for more information on incorporating vegetarian protein into your diet.

Did you hear about Oprah’s Vegan Challenge from February 2011 when 378 of her staffers along with herself went vegan for a week? Checkout their feedback at: www.oprah.com. One of the employees actually lost 11 pounds in one week; he has forever changed the way he eats. According to the Vegetarian Times and their study Vegetarianism in America, 3.2% of US adults, or 7.3 million people, are vegetarian.

We hope you will take our challenge and let us know how it goes. Email us at comments@tastybite.com with your feedback. There is a special prize for you if you do complete this and tell us about it.

Hunger Action Month, We Need You!

It is so easy to get caught up in day-to-day life that we often don’t realize that for 1 in 6 Americans, hunger is a day-to-day challenge. Present day economic challenges have made it difficult for many to find jobs and acquiring sufficient food has become unaffordable for many. In fact, only 10% of those that are hungry are actually homeless. According to the USDA more than 50 million Americans do not have enough food in their homes and of that 17 million are children.

As a food brand, we strive to do our part. Over the years, Tasty Bite has supported hunger programs with our great tasting, high nutrition meals in our communities in India and the US. September is Hunger Action Month and a donation of just $45 can feed a family of 4 for one month.

Tasty Bite will be donating 5% of all profits from each purchase from this Newsletter Promotion at www.tastybite.com/shop. To donate more directly, click here: Feed America.

Taking a Step Back on Labor Day

What are your plans for Labor Day?  Is it to go to a parade, relax with family, or celebrate the end of summer with a barbeque?  Did you know that the first Labor Day in the US was celebrated in Boston on September 5, 1882?  Labor Day is a day when most people are off from work thanks to former President Grover Cleveland who in 1894 made it a federal holiday.  Us Tasty Bitters are proud to celebrate this wonderful holiday and what better way to do this then relaxing with friends and family and eating.  It is what we do best.

We love to eat and with the launch of our new Cooking Sauces we are enjoying being creative and making our lives easier at the grill. While chicken wings and hamburgers are BBQ staples, there are endless marinades and flavors to prepare these dishes. However, most of these aren’t too healthy, or very innovative. New Tasty Bite Cooking Sauces though bring lively, healthy flavors to even the most traditional grill.

Tasty Bite Cooking Sauces bring unique flavors from around the world to a BBQ, such as Tikka Masala and Pad Thai. They can be used to sauté any number of meats, along with tofu and veggies, creating BBQ dishes such as Spicy Pad Thai Wings and Korma Chicken Salad. They are a healthier alternative to most marinades, as all Tasty Bite products are vegetarian. use all natural ingredients and are kosher. Many are even gluten-free and vegan.

We challenge you to experiment with our new Cooking Sauces.  Please submit a recipe using our Cooking Sauces and we will send you a free sauce.  Just email the recipe to comments@tastybite.com along with a picture of the finished product.  We can’t wait to see your creations!  Happy Labor Day!

Ready to Eat, Ready for a Storm

While politicians in Washington continue to debate whether global warming is for real, one thing is for sure—we’re definitely seeing “global weirding,” as coined by New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. One minute it is beautiful and the next you are faced with a severe thunderstorm, hail, or worse, a tornado. Many Americans this summer have encountered weather that is very unusual in the most unlikely of places. You never know when you are going to be without power for a couple of days to a week, but these days you can’t take any chances.

I am in the middle of not having power from a severe thunderstorm this week and I am expected to have no power for a minimum of 5 days! This means that all my food in the refrigerator and freezer has spoiled. However, my saving grace has been Tasty Bite! Since I have a gas stove and propane grille, all I have to do is boil water and heat up Tasty Bite. If necessary, I can even put my Tasty Bite pouches in the sun, and they will heat up sufficiently! While I sit and watch my perishable food spoil I am happy that Tasty Bite is shelf stable and ready to eat.

So far this storm season, our family has enjoyed we have eaten Tasty Bite Brown Rice with Madras Lentils and a side of avocado, Tofu Corn Masala with Tasty Bite Garlic Brown Rice and fresh peaches. Tonight I am planning on using some of my left over salad ingredients in the cooler and mixing it with our Barley Medley Meal Inspirations and some non-perishable ingredients to make the Barley Medley Summer Salad. Check out our latest video on YouTube to show you how to make this salad: http://bit.;ey/lc6WrN. All of these wonderful meals require no refrigeration and can either be heated up on the grille, fire, gas stove or in the sun!

What's on Your Food Plate?

All of you must have read about Michelle Obama's new "MyPlate" by now. The pyramid has been replaced with a circle and the hope is that people load up on vegetables, fruit, lean protein, and grains at a meal, along with a serving of dairy. It is using the same idea of the pyramid, but it will allow us a better and more conceptual understanding of how a healthy meal should look. Michelle Obama said that "As long as they're half full of fruits and vegetables and paired with lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy, we're golden."

If you are looking for a quick and healthy solution to follow the "MyPlate" guidelines, try our entrees and rice. Just heat the entrees and rice for 90 seconds and serve with a fruit, vegetable, and dairy serving. Our entrees are full of excellent vegetarian protein and our rice completes the grain requirement. If you are a little more adventurous try cooking with our Meal Inspirations. These are made with lentils, beans and whole grains. We have lots of recipe suggestions just for you that can be found on our website: http://www.tastybite.com/recipes. There is also the option to use our Cooking Sauces. Incorporate them into a stir-fry using a lean protein and vegetables served with our rice, fruit, and dairy. There you have it, a complete food plate made in heaven. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated or compromise on taste. More information can be found at: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/ on Michelle Obama’s new “MyPlate.”

We are looking to hear what is on your food plate. Submit recipes for a specific part of the Foods Plate and plate suggestions to comments@tastybite.com and you will be entered* to receive a Tasty Bite gift pack to help fill up your plate for a week.

* Contest Details: The winner will be drawn at random on July 31st and will be notified by email. When submitted your recipe suggestions please include your name, email, mailing address, phone, and a recipe for a specific part of the Food Plate. Multiple entries per person are allowed.

Community Values Ecosystem

What does Earth Day mean to you? To some people it means recycling, energy conservation, and giving back to the earth. We here at Tasty Bite believe in working towards reducing our footprint everyday. Our belief is creating an ecosystem that takes into account renewable energy, waste reduction, and sustainable agriculture. Since we practice this effort to be green everyday it is not often that we talk about it. We wanted to take this special day to share our efforts and active projects to make the world a better place.

Renewable energy: A major potion of Tasty Bite’s energy requirement is generated by food and agriculture waste. In particular, the heat used for our kettles and sterilizers comes from this source. We also switched from fuel oil to sugar cane water briquettes heat the water boilers. Conserving and optimizing the use of energy is a constant priority at Tasty Bite. 100% of Tasty Bite products are manufactured with renewable resources.

Waste Reduction/Water Conservation: All water used in the Tasty Bite factory to manufacture our food is treated organically and recycled back into the Tasty Bite farm. Every drop is precious. With this system we save at least 40,000 liters every day, this is enough water to sustain a village in India.

Sustainable Agriculture: We use our farm in India as a demonstration farm for the highest yielding, most sustainable practices for farmers in the community.  We teach local farmers best practices for farming and increasing vegetable yield, giving back to the community and our earth.

We hope this gives you a sense as to what we do on Earth Day and everyday to create a better world. In your life please try to make a difference by: recycling, conserving water, walking, using energy efficient appliances and light bulbs, planting a tree, and spreading the word. Happy Earth Day!

Trouble With Gluten

If you know someone with Celiac Disease (also called Coeliac disease), or you have seen the “gluten-free” sign at the supermarket on food labels, then you might be curious to know what is gluten and what causes Celiac disease. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune condition which can affect people of all ages and is life long. When people with Celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, it creates a toxic reaction that causes damage to the small intestine and does not allow food to be properly absorbed. Gluten (from Latin gluten "glue") is a protein substance that is found in foods processed from wheat and related species, including barley and rye. Symptoms of Celiac disease include diarrhea, abdominal pain and weight loss amongst others.

Celiac disease is believed to have been prevalent from the time humans started cultivating grains thousands of years ago. The first well known documentation of Celiac disease is from 1887 while the specific identification of gluten as the key active ingredient causing Celiac disease was done in 1952. There has been some recent research identifying specific genes responsible for Celiac disease. While Celiac disease has been around for millennia, the prevalence is believed to be on the rise. About 50 years ago, only 0.2 percent of the population had celiac disease. Today, it’s estimated that about one in 100 people have celiac disease. Scientists don’t know why celiac is on the rise. It may be due to changes in the way wheat is cultivated or the increased usage of gluten in medications and processed foods in the last few decades.

At this time the only effective treatment for Celiac disease is a gluten-free diet. The list of foods that a Celiac disease patient may get ill by includes but not limited to any food that contains flours or grains of wheat, rye, barley and oats, marinades, sauces, mayonnaise, pickles, pasta, couscous, breadcrumbs, pastry, soy sauce and mono-sodium glutamate (MSG), malt or malt flavoring, malt vinegar, processed meat or seafood, beer, grain based spirits. . There is a large list of foods not allowed and as a simple rule; processed and prepared foods are not allowed unless specifically marked as gluten free.

If you are diagnosed with Celiac disease, it’s important to share your dietary needs with friends and family. You might be surprised how with a little help from you and the great gluten-free foods available these days, a great gluten free dinner could be prepared!

That’s where we at Tasty Bite come in! Out of our 39 products, 36 are gluten-free, check out Tasty Bite gluten free products here, and yet have tremendous flavor and good nutritional values. We have products with lentils, vegetables, paneer cheese and a myriad herbs and spices that make superb accompaniments or main courses in a meal. Use our Madras Lentils as taco base, our Punjab Eggplant as a pasta sauce or our Bombay Potatoes in a salad. So, for all of you and your loved ones on a gluten-free diet, Spice It Up with Tasty Bite and don’t look back!

Winter-fit with flavor!

Now that the holidays are over, you find yourself searching for your most forgiving clothes as your body deals with the effects of a little too much food. During the holidays along with all the best wishes, warmth and great food comes the familiar worry - how much weight did I gain? How can I lose the weight I gained? If you share these worries the first thing to know is that you are not at all alone. Studies suggest that most adult Americans gain roughly 1 pound of weight each year, and a majority of the weight gain happens during the holiday season. So before going on a crash diet or starving, keep in mind that your body requires right nutrients to support the immune system.

Especially during winter a balanced diet is a must as its not just clothes that keep you warm but also the food you eat. . Overeating overloads metabolism and diminishes digestion, also leading to a drop in body temperature. The solution is to eat a little of nutrient dense warming foods rather than more of calorie dense food. Increase your intake of protein rich food, because protein increases thermo genesis that helps you stay warm. For this you can include eggs, meat, legumes, milk and fish.

Legumes, particularly, are an excellent source of protein that not only help in body rebuilding and repair, but also provide fiber for warmth without the accompanying cholesterol and saturated fats of meat products. The term ‘legume’ really covers a wonderful array of foods – all dried beans (chickpeas, kidney beans, pinto beans etc) and lentils. They are often referred to as ‘vegetarian protein’ – one cup of cooked chickpeas, for instance, gives you 14.5 gms of protein.

Also incorporate greens like spinach, fenugreek leaves, watercress, arugula, dandelion greens, kale, collard greens, mustard greens, broccoli raab, bok choy, and swiss chard in your diet. Dark green leafy vegetables are perhaps the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food. They are a rich source of minerals (including iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium) and vitamins (K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins). Chlorophyll in green plants acts as a blood detoxifier and a good antioxidant that supports the immune system. They have a variety of phytonutrients including beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which protect your cells from damage and your eyes from age-related problems. When you keep your immune health in top shape, your overall health benefits.

Don’t forget to spice up your food! Spices not only provide flavor but also help you stay warm by increasing metabolism. Besides generating heat, spices like cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, garlic, cloves and pepper also contain phytochemical that act as decongestants, are anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory. In addition, studies are increasingly showing that when we eat foods with rich flavors, we feel a sense of satiety that discourages the body from craving the satiety of fatty foods. Of course butter and cream make us feel satisfied and well-fed, but a good way to reduce these ingredients in our foods is to add on aromatic, flavorful spices. They provide a sense of satisfaction on the palate that is ‘transmitted’ to the brain, telling it we’ve eaten well. So: no need for those ‘comforting’ fats.

Ginger and garlic are also great decongestants and improve blood circulation. Intersperse meals with small quantities of unsalted nuts and dry fruits like almonds, cashews, raisins, walnuts and apricots. They are nutritionally dense and take longer to digest, keeping your appetite in check.

At Tasty bite we have a range of products that can help you increase your protein intake this winter with all the flavors of spices and herbs. Our Meal Inspirations is a perfect mix of protein and flavor, they are fully cooked all natural legumes which are lightly coated with spices and herbs. Just add them to your salads, main dishes, snacks and more! If you are on a low carb-diet then we recommend our ready to eat Brown Rice and Garlic Brown Rice. One pouch contains two servings and per serving you will get 29g of carbohydrates, which is 10% of your daily requirement. This winter your diet mantra should be to eat sufficiently and often so that you are not hungry, eat healthy, and definitely ‘Spice It Up’to stay - winter-fit!
