Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights will be celebrated by Indians all over the world on the 26th of October, this year. The date changes every year as it is based on the lunar calendar. The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the lifting of spiritual darkness. Houses are cleaned and decorated, traditional oil lamps called Diyas are lit and intricate colorful patterns are made at the entrance of the house, to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. Traditions vary, but mostly the day starts with a cleansing oil bath before sunrise, new clothes, prayer, bursting of firecrackers and the distribution of gifts to family and friends.

Mouth-watering Indian sweets are an important part of Diwali. Every region in the country has its own traditional special sweets and serving them to guests is a way of spreading joy and goodwill. Though sweets are the main feature, a wide variety of deep fried snacks and savory mixes are also available during this festival....they taste great and are quite addictive!
